This year promised to be even better than last
- not so unusual for this festival! Since it's inception in 1980, at times being a 2-day event
- it's been one that provides excellent BLUES entertainment, good ambiance (trees & grass)
& friendly people (we are blues people, after all).
The 25th
Anniversary for the MFBF was the first time they have ever requested a donation - in the past
it's always been free. For $5.00 we got: David Jacobs-Strain, who did a fine act & definitely
appealed to the college crowd; the Lara Price Band, a truly pleasant surprise to me, although
I'd seen their name here in Sacto, had never caught their act. Pretty hot!
Next up,
BLUES Master Craig Horton, one of the last living blues legends around, not indicating age
so much as experience. Mr. Craig can really croon! Everyone was startin' to jump and jive &
next thing we knew, here came Chris Cain to take it up a notch! Chris constantly amazes me
- just when I think he can't get any better than this, he DOES!
Not to
slip-slide away after that powerhouse from Chris, we got the Tommy Castro Band! His style is
still good, the same charmer, but a little older now & singing' some of his best stuff.
Let's hope he continues to write & put 'em out.
Next, what
everyone was waitin' for - Ms. ETTA JAMES, the diva of the blues! I've seen this lady through
"thick n thin" - if you know what I mean - yet she is consistently the showman, artist
& entertainer! Her vocals are a little lower than the younger Etta, but she's still the
nasty, sexy 18 y/o girl from the day. She gave a quality performance that had everyone on their
feet, but alas, no encore.
Truly a
Great Day for the Blues!
